Motorhome Spare Tire Rotation Tip

If you experience a rear dual blowout and your spare tire is brand new, avoid mounting the new spare directly onto the rear dual axle assembly. Because a un-worn tire has a larger overall diameter than its worn partner on the dual set, the new tire will carry a disproportionate amount of load weight and wear down rapidly to match the level of the surrounding tires.

Recommended Rotation Strategy:

Instead, install one of your partially worn front steer tires onto the rear dual position to match the existing tread depth of the remaining dual. Then, mount your brand-new spare onto the front steer position (where tire wear is even and controllable).

Finally, take the remaining worn front steer tire, place it into storage as your new emergency spare, and buy a second new tire for the opposite front position. For the cost of just one additional new tire, you equip your rig with fresh matching steer tires while preventing an aged spare from rotting away unused!
